CITY SANCTUARIES: This was my imagination running on slow burn thinking back to my youth living in New York. Cities often bring the best and the worst of mankind in close proximity. One can be frightfully alone or mad with the mayhem, so it’s important to have sanctuaries, museums, parks and places of worship [even if you have none] to find & calm one’s center again. Fortunately for me, the Gugenheim, Metropolitan and Central Park were but a few walking blocks away, while Cark Schurz Park - where Gracie Mansion resides - was a mere doorstep away from my sister's apartment. New York is noted for its ups and downs and living there through the late '60's & mid 70's was a truly tumultuous time of social revolution, relationships, experimentation, fun and at times seemingly endless chaos. As quick as it began it came to an end, forever, never to be repeated again. Surviving it all required friends and at times, time alone to regain a sense of balance, focus and direction. For that I thank the sanctuary spaces, even if just a quiet park bench upon which to perch in the sun in quiet contemplation.
