AUTUMN LIGHTS: As a youthful city dweller, an annual Fall ritual was the weekend road trips into Vermont and New Hampshire to cruise the Kancamagus highway & ride the Cog Steam Railroad up the top of Mount Washington. If caught just right, few places can match the brilliant reds, yellows and oranges of New England's sugar maples, polka-dotted with evergreens seeming stretching forever over hill and dale.... albeit maybe the upper peninsula of Michigan. The backroads almost become full-stop, as flatlanders from New York & the Jersey burbs flock to see this last burst of color before the bleak winter winds begin to howl. In turn around fair play, it wasn't lost that the city soon became a pulsating glow of holiday lights and color that drew the country folk from the mountains to do their yearend annual shopping, all the while savoring all the delights the city had to offer, from the South Port Museum district to the Cloisters overlooking the Palisades - for those in the know. Migrations, like the tide to the leaf peepers, come and go, but I was glad to see the city lights dimmed, when the nighttime flights of migrating birds were most in need safe passage South. Couldn't get it all on one canvas, but that's my story for what it's worth.
